Car crash in Hobson St

Late last night a 'boy racer' lost control of his vehicle while reversing along Hobson St. The vehicle mounted the curb (in reverse) smashing into a front entrance gate and wooden fencing and wrecking these. Support posts of an adjacent carport were dismantled as well. A parked resident's car was also damaged and shunted along.

Local residents were quickly upon the scene. Police arrived in force, including dog handler, soon afterward.

Residents have noted an increase in dangerous driving along Hobson St, usually involving speed. In 2005 WCC proposed plans to manage traffic in Hobson St but nothing eventuated.

  1. This is appauling but unfortunately inevitable. Over the last several years the speeds reached in Hobson St, during the day but particularly late at night have become quite frightening. Thank goodness no one was hurt. What an irony that 60 Minutes carried an article on the night of this accident ('accident' well questionable) about youth in Australia drinking driving and dying! Of course, the youth involved in this event would not be watching such a programme. It is sad that residents are left with the damage to clean up. Property to be rebuilt and another resident with a car that needs fixing.

  2. It's best to focus on the bright side first: no one was hurt. Of course, it's important to be concerned about an issue like this. It could be a lot worse than property damage next time.

  3. High speed traffic is a real problem - intentional or no. Traffic coming off the motorway exit ramps all over Thorndon is way too fast, upwards of 70kpm into a residential area. WCC seems intent on making roading commercially attractive rather than safe for those who live in the suburb, and the many preschool primary and secondary students. Time to get vocal, I believe.

  4. Accidents in a neighborhood will surely cause a major scene. I do hope that no one was hurt in the incident. Anyway, what happened to the ‘boy racer’? I think you know that, if he was proven guilty, charges could be pressed against him.

  5. Reckless driving and overspeeding often results to road accidents! I think something must be done in Hobson St. to keep accidents from happening there. I feel sorry for the local residents that they have to be involved in accidents because of other people’s carelessness!
